An insight into an English teacher’s journey…
Interview questions were answered by Dee – an English teacher over here in Beijing, China.
1) Why did you decide to teach in China?
I have always wanted to teach abroad but I was not sure which country I wanted to go to. Once I went to an event where people would talk about their experiences teaching in different Asian countries and China was the one that resonated with me. I liked the culture, and how safe it was.
2) What advice would you give someone looking to start their teaching journey here in China?
I would say China is different in a way that most people are not used to foreigners so be prepared for people who are going to take an interest in you. Also, be prepared for culture shock but in no time you will feel at home.
3) Who is your biggest inspiration within the teaching community?
Definitely my former Life Science teacher Mr. Madolo back in High School. He actually was the one who inspired me to be a teacher. For him, it seemed so easy and he had a way of connecting with each and every student. He was fun but also took his job seriously. We all knew there are times for games but also time to learn. He was that good.
4) How have you found the experience of dealing with recruiters over here in China?
I’ve had different experiences with different recruiters. Some will contact you and ask for your documents and will never hear from them again. I’ve also had great experiences because of how respectful, reassuring and quick to give you feedback about everything concerning your applications. I’ve actually made friends with some of the recruiters.
5) Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?
I would like to see myself still teaching but be more involved with the curriculum for the school I will be working with. I would like to use all the skills I have learned with my teaching experience to add more to my school curriculum.
